Get Ahead of Your Child’s Myopia
Children grow rapidly, and their vision plays an essential role in their development. Myopia, or nearsightedness, can hinder their ability to fully engage in various activities, from reading and studying to playing sports and socializing.
We aim to support your child’s visual health and overall growth and development by controlling myopia early and effectively. We offer various myopia control options, including contact lenses, spectacle lenses, and atropine.
Get started on understanding your child’s vision and discussing our myopia control methods with a comprehensive eye exam at your next visit.
Book AppointmentWhat Is Myopia Control?
Myopia is a vision error that causes distant objects to appear blurry while nearby objects are clear. It commonly develops during childhood and can lead to eye health problems in adulthood.
Myopia control is important in slowing myopia progression to reduce the likelihood of developing complications or eye diseases.
Myopia & the Classroom
Children with myopia may face unexpected difficulties in the classroom compared to their peers because of their vision. Myopia can present challenges with everyday tasks essential for learning and academic success, including:
- Gross and fine motor skills
- Language skills
- Copying and repeating
- Social skills
- Reading
- Concentration
Myopia Signs & Symptoms
Your child may not know they have a vision problem or think how they see is normal. Keep an eye out for common complaints and behaviours that may indicate myopia, including:
- Complaints of blurry vision
- Squinting
- Holding objects close to their face
- Eye strain and headaches
- Excessive blinking
- Eye rubbing
If you notice any of these symptoms or other signs of a problem, please book an eye exam.
Our Myopia Control Methods
Your child may need to try a few myopia-control methods to find one that works for them. We offer several myopia control treatments to help slow the progression of myopia early and help restore clear vision.
These methods include myopia-control contact lenses, lenses for glasses, and low-dose atropine eye drops.
Myopia-Control Contact Lenses
Myopia control contact lenses are specially designed soft contact lenses that slow myopia progression in children. These contact lenses may be a good option if your child is particularly active or doesn’t like the feeling of glasses on their face.
At Twenty20 Eyewear, we offer Abiliti 1-Day and MiSight 1 day myopia control contact lenses. Both are soft contact lenses that slow myopia progression in children.
Myopia-Control Spectacle Lenses
If contact lenses aren’t an option for your child, we also offer myopia-control spectacle lenses. Myopia control glasses are safe, effective, and as easy to get used to as traditional glasses.
We carry MiYOSMART and MyoVision lenses at Twenty20 Eyecare. Each brand of lens uses a unique lens mapping technology to correct vision and slow down the progression of myopia.
Low-Dose Atropine Drops
Atropine is a medication used to dilate pupils for dilated eye exams. It’s also been shown to be effective in slowing myopia progression children. Atropine in a 0.01%, 0.025%, or 0.05% concentration has been found to be a safe and effective myopia control method for kids.
Atropine can reduce myopia progression by about 50%, even in low doses.
An Eye Exam Is the First Step
Strong, clear vision is essential for children’s learning and growth. Keeping up with their regular comprehensive eye exams gives their vision the best chance at clarity and can help address myopia early.
